The High Cost of Dressing by Outfit

“My Nana’s coming for a visit this week,” I overheard one little girl tell her friend on a
playground recently.  “I got a special outfit to wear when we pick her up at the airport.”

The sentence made me smile and shake my head. Ah, yes.  I remember those days.

Special outfits:

Special outfits for special occasions like dates, parties, or speeches.  Or weddings.  Or funerals.
Or graduations.  Heck, we even used to get special outfits for school or holiday pictures.  In fact,
we rarely went shopping for clothes; we went shopping for special outfits.

Then when the event was over, the outfit usually just hung in the closet as a reminder of what
we’d worn when.  New function?  New outfit! Heaven forbid we should be seen in the same thing
twice.

Sound familiar?

It’s an expensive habit that can add up quickly, particularly if you’ve never shopped any other
way.  If you tend to shop by outfit, then what I’m about to reveal may hit you like the
proverbial “ton of bricks.”

Are you ready?

It’s cheaper to plan and buy a wardrobe than to fill your closet with special outfits.

Let me put it to you another way:  it’s cheaper to plan a week of menus and go buy groceries than
it is to eat out every night.

Now the second one seems obvious.  If you take your family to a restaurant or through a drive
thru every night for dinner, you could easily spend several hundred dollars in a week.  The
entrees, the beverages, the tips – it all adds up pretty quickly.  If you’ve ever eaten out every
meal while on vacation, you know this is true. And when you consider that a lot of families do
this ALL THE TIME, it’s no wonder everyone’s squawking about the high cost of food.

So let’s apply that same analogy to your closet. Let’s say that instead of planning and buying
what you need at the beginning of a season, that you buy a new outfit as needed every time
something comes up.  Buying outfit by outfit may seem cheaper than buying a bunch of clothes at
once, but if you consider that when you buy a new outfit, you often buy new shoes, hosiery, and
other accessories to go with it, you can easily see how costs add up.  That $40 “great” deal can
suddenly become $200 worth of shoes and jewelry that doesn’t go with anything else you own.

So what’s a better strategy?

Well, first, to GET a strategy.  To deliberately plan how you’re going to spend your money on
clothes.

Here are a few things to consider:

1.    Your Lifestyle

Look at how you spend your waking hours over the course of a week.  If it looks something like
this:

Work – 60%
Social – 20%
Leisure – 20%

Then your wardrobe should consist of 60% work, 20% social (church, parties, visiting, etc.), and
20% leisure (running errands, watching TV, cleaning house) appropriate attire.

If you’re a stay-at-home mom and your time is spent like this:

With Kids – 80%
Social – 10%
Leisure – 10%

Then your wardrobe should reflect this with 80% of what you wear appropriate to work with kids,
10% appropriate for social activities, and 10% appropriate for leisure time.

Adjust this according to your particular situation.

2.    Your Budget

You should spend anywhere from 3-10% of what you earn on clothing.  If you wear a uniform to work,
you’ll probably spend less (3%); if you’re in a high profile position (defense lawyer, socialite,
television personality), you’ll probably spend more (10%).  The average person should spend
around 6%.

REMEMBER:  This figure correlates to your household income and expenses.  So if your
household income is $50,000 per year, for example, you should allocate approximately 6% (or
$3,000) to clothe EVERYONE in the household.  If your household income is $100,000 per year, then
you have $6,000 (6%) to spread among the family. This isn’t per person, unless you live alone.
This is per household.

Once you know what kinds of clothes should be in your wardrobe and how much you should allocate in
your budget, see how your closet stacks up.  If your lifestyle is:

Work    - 60%
Social – 20%
Leisure – 20%

But your existing wardrobe is:

Work – 90%
Social – 3%
Leisure – 7%

Then it’s no wonder you start looking for something to wear whenever you’re extended an
invitation, or that your errand clothes have holes in them because you wear the same two or
three things all the time.  It’s because your wardrobe doesn’t match your lifestyle.

So how do you fix it?

1.    Fill in The Gaps

Go spend some of your budget to fill in the gaps so that your closet reflects your lifestyle.

2.    Buy Mix-and-Match Items

Buy items that you can mix-and-match with other pieces in your wardrobe, not something that can
only be worn one way.

3.    Decide on A Color Scheme

If you look best in black, white, and blue, buy clothes in those colors and maybe only two or
three more (like red, taupe, and green).  If you lean toward a warm palette of gold, ivory, and
brown, then buy clothes in those colors and maybe two or three more (French navy, camel, peach).
Why?  Because they’ll mix-and-match with each other, as will your accessories.  You’ll get a
lot more “bang” for your money.

4.    Stick To Your Budget

Once you’ve determined how much you can spend on yourself for a season, make a list of what you
need to fill in the gaps, and head to the store with CASH.  No charge cards, checks, etc.  You’ll
find yourself carefully considering each purchase, and be a lot less likely to impulse
buy.  The end result?  You’ll only buy what you need.

Planning your wardrobe purchases DOES take time and a little practice, but can yield you great
rewards.  You’ll become better at working with what you already own instead of always assuming
you need something new.  Not only does this save you money, it also reduces all that closet
clutter so you can actually see what you have so you can wear what you own.

Narciso had lost one of his dearest and best friends and for him this was a reality check and a wake up call.. Life without friends, family and the love of his work didn’t seem like such a great opportunity anymore. Narciso left LVMH and came home realizing what he needed was the freedom of his own design collection.
Narciso was able to focus on his own line of clothing creating the perfect look for woman. Rather than designing dresses for matchsticks, Narciso?s designs accentuated the curves and bustline of the woman, creating what was called a real woman design. Narciso Latin background came through in his designs with each having a hint of Latin flare. Narciso said Latino women had figures and were proud of that fact so they were perfect for where he wanted to go with his designs.
Narciso talents as a designer were so good, he was even able to make the petite woman look voluptuous. Sarah Jessica Parker, Sheryl Crow and Salma Hayek all wore exquisite gowns designed by Narciso. Not one of these celebs was 6 feet tall, yet the fit of these gowns was to die for.
In the spring of 1998 Narciso debuted his ready to wear signature collection in Milan. It made it into virtually every major fashion magazine. Rodriguez’s American experience and Latin roots, combined with his flair for European tradition of fine design, are all part of his great success. In 1997 Narciso won Best New Designer from the VH1 Fashion Awards, and was awarded Hispanic Designer of the Year. In 1998 he won the CFDA Perry Ellis Award, In the past these honors have gone to designers such as Oscar de la Renta and Carolina Herrera. Ana: ?[laughs] Yeah, I was I guess not unlike most woman in that I was always frustrated when it came time to go on a trip or head to the beach- I would get into this ?bikini panic? because it was impossible to find a bikini that not everyone had, was cute, sexy- really the perfect bikini. I was not used to this feeling at all, I grew up in Brazil and down there the beach and bikinis are really part of the culture. Brazilians love to show off and spend time with their friends and family on the beach. So long story short, I was always around the environment and definitely interested in swimwear fashion and bikinis so this frustration got the best of me- I started Look Swimwear.?

I have heard you often reference the ?perfect bikini?- can you tell me more about what you mean by that?

Ana:? Well the perfect bikini is really one that has everything that all of us women look for. Small for sure… For our readers who aren?t familiar with your bikini lines how do you describe them?

Ana:? I think the best way to describe them is that all of our bikinis are small, sexy, stylish and fun. We market ourselves as a purveyor of micro and Brazilian bikinis and that is in my mind exactly what we are. Anyone can sell bikinis but Look Swimwear is a purveyor because we take so much pride in our design, workmanship, materials we use and service- and we do not take this commitment lightly either. I am always talking to our customers to make sure that we are exceeding their expectations from beginning to end. I think that is one of the things that make us so successful. Consumers these days are very demanding and high expectations. But, they also are loyal to the companies that they trust and serve them well so I guess our huge growth is a vote from our customer base really.?

Look Swimwear is now one of the fastest growing micro bikini companies, what plans do you have for the coming season?

Ana:? Lycras, prints and cuts are always changing is all I will say. I cannot tell you what we are going to do but I will say that you will love our new ideas and that we will not loose focus on who we are- a damn good sexy bikini company. My direct staff and our employees are some of the most talented and creative people I have ever known- they are really the backbone to what Look is all about. So when you work with talented and creative people then only good things will come of it so that means more sexy bikinis for all of you ladies to wear and for the guys to enjoy.?

How do men come into Look Swimwear equation?

Ana:? Well they are really the reason why we all want to wear sexy little bikinis and show off. There is nothing better for a woman?s confidence than her knowing that ?she still has it?. Don?t get me wrong, a confident woman does not need someone else?s approval to have a strong sense of self but showing off , having fun and getting attention is such a rush and is good for all ages… [laughs]?

What would you say to some of the women out there who maybe have never worn a micro or Brazilian bikini before?

Ana:? They should try it out for sure and get away from those boring suits that cover up everything. I go to beaches all over the world and am still amazed at how some people can say that what they are wearing is a bikini. I can tell you that wearing a smaller bikini is a lot of fun but definitely not made for the family reunion. We have so many women and couples buy from us when they head out for couples vacation or even for the boat, pool or where ever. It?s a huge confidence booster to catch the guys looking out the corner of their eyes at you and plus they are really comfortable. Its funny, ten years ago thong underwear was just catching on with the masses and now look around, everyone is wearing them. I am not saying that micro and Brazilian bikinis are going to take over the traditional and conservative bikini but the market is growing like crazy and women all over the world are catching on. I guess it really comes down to if the woman has a little devilish side of her that likes to show off or break the rules. If she does then I would say go for it and try it out- we have not heard any complaints yet.?
